Grandpa and the Kids are a mythical grandpa and his 2 grand daughters. Their names are Mary and Ruth. Mary is the oldest and knows grandpa "stretches the truth" a little, but she is still his tomboy and still believes most of what he says. She really questions him at times about his "stories", but poor Ruth, she is young enough she believes everything.

They love to visit grandpa and go to his hideout, a log cabin with fireplace and very rustic furniture and the best hot chocolate a girl can drink. Grandpa lives on a wooded area surrounding a small lake. The place has a stream running through the backside and the area is home to many types of wildlife. Grandpa has a nice home on the shore of the lake, but prefers the rustic cabin at the back of the area close to the stream and in the wooded area. The name of the area is singing waters. Grandpa believes that the stream sings and that life is lived at the beat of a song.

They also love old Tom, a pointer that grandma brought home to be her dog, but forgot to tell grandpa and Tom he was her dog. Tom's main ability is pointing at pointing food and automobiles. Tom believes God put the bird feeders in the yard for his personal pleasure. He watches the birds and never chases them, but let a squirrel come around and he forgets his old age, arthritis and other ailments.

The girls know that OLE Tom just mostly watches grandpa, the birds and the food bowl, but they think he is the greatest hunting dog that ever lived. Grandpa probably led them to believe that with his tales, but in reality, I can never remember grandpa hunting. He never had time; he was always on the look out for the best fishing hole in the world. He also knows all the best places to take granddaughters for that "outdoor experience" as he calls it.

Mary is getting to be a good hiker and Ruth is good at riding in the little red wagon and sharing the ride with OLE Tom. Grandpa seems tireless when in the outdoors with these two and I doubt if his yarns will ruin them for life. I asked grandpa one day if he was sorry he did not have a grandson, he looked at me and I knew I had said the wrong thing.

Son, he said, let me tell you about women and the outdoors. Do you know that the only reason Jack London did not write more about women was because he was kinda sheltered and did not know any real women? Why I tell you, the klondike gold rush would not have been if women had not left San Francisco and gone to Alaska in them early days to take care of the guys, You know men can't cook, and nurse sick people, them gals done it.

You know grandpa made a believer out of me, but I know if there was a grandson, he would have really been proud of that boy also. Grandpa believes that age should be shared with the young, and it does not matter that history changes with age. To hear grandpa tell it, he walked to school 4 miles every day, in a snowstorm and uphill both directions. Mary and Ruth will grow up knowing the family history because grandpa likes to talk about the history and he is a natural born storyteller. They will also know about the outdoors and all of natures living things because grandpa, with all his faults, believes little boys and girls need to know of the world around them and how to take care of it.

I ask that you join grandpa, Mary and Ruth on their adventures in these pages. I know you will laugh and cry and remember how it really was, once upon a time in the country.
